Uzbekistan's scene runs on two engines. One is hip hop that blends contemporary beats with local sounds and keeps returning to love, society and self-reflection. The other is pop and electronic, where RizaNovaUZ has built about 2.0M YouTube subscribers, one of the biggest music channels in the country. The label behind that channel also looks after Shahzoda, a major pop singer. The top ten Uzbek music channels together reach about 8.1M subscribers, so this is a crowd that clicks, shares and comes back.
The WorldWidePop playlist for Uzbekistan holds ten videos, and nothing new came in during October. What it shows is where the weight sits. Shahzoda's Aldagan sen is the newest video here, a pop cut from RizaNovaUZ. Everything else is Shoxrux. SHOXRUX TV is the most represented channel, and the older cuts, including Baxtli bo'l, Salom with Sarvar and O'zingdan ko'r, have been on YouTube for years and still hold the floor. Shoxrux is one of the few Uzbek artists who regularly play live at local venues, and you can hear that in songs built to be sung back to a room.
Listeners are reaching in from Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye and Azerbaijan, which says the sound is travelling beyond its home market. Watch the next few weeks. Shoxrux has a large concert at Humo Arena on 1 November, with hits like Balandda and Hayr Bevafo alongside new compositions, and his new track OVORA has been released across YouTube and the major music platforms.
