Lagos is the room to watch right now. On 8 October, Blaqbonez's "Ikebe", featuring Asake, led the city's Apple Music chart, and 15 of the Top 25 leaned African, with 10 of them Afrobeats. Davido's "B4 B4" sat at #14. The club life is catching up with the charts. Traffic Club made its debut on Broad Street on Lagos Island, in an old printing house, curated by Mainland Block Party, with DJ sets between live acts and crowds singing every word back. Alongside it sits the post-Alté wave, where punk, hip-hop and R&B bleed into Afropop. scottyolorin's "GLACIER GIRL" is already a singalong.
This month, two videos came into the WorldWidePop playlist: Zemi's "Luna" and MYST's "REAL SHII" visualizer, which brings the playlist to 19 videos. Both were added in October. The playlist's wider Nigerian lineup is still anchored by Davido, whose "B4 B4" spent 39 days on the Nigeria Apple Music chart and peaked at #1, while "2am in toronto" entered at #5 on 10 October. What it says about the scene: the big-room Afrobeats hits and the underground crowd are sharing the same dancefloors.
Commenters are listening from Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. Next, watch whether the post-Alté names move from club nights into the charts, and whether Lagos's party circuit keeps pulling crowds into the same rooms.
