Ghana’s musical engine does not run on a single label. Across local radio and dancefloors, the country operates on a collision of Afrobeats, Highlife, Hiplife, and dancehall. It is an ecosystem where dominance is established on the ground in Accra, charted track by track, and sustained by artists who have spent over a decade anchoring the rotation.
At the center of that sound are Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy. On the MUSIGA charts, Stonebwoy holds the number six spot among artistes with four active tracks, followed by Shatta Wale at number seven with three. Both artists have kept a lock on local charts while pivoting between genres.
Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. in Accra, remains one of the most visible names in Ghanaian dancehall. Known locally as the King of African Dancehall, he produces and masterminds the bulk of his output independently, having recorded and mastered most of his hit songs himself. Graphic Online noted that 2025 belonged to Shatta Wale alongside Wendy Shay and Black Sherif, driven in part by his single “Street Crown,” which became one of the year’s defining records and sustained heavy activity on Soundcharts’ Ghana Audiomack chart. His catalog spans local mainstays like “Ayoo,” “ON GOD,” and “Pancake,” running back to earlier staples like “Fool Is The Last To Know” and 2018’s “Bullet Proof.” As one YouTube viewer posted under “Bullet Proof,” “I am from Nigeria but i love shatta Wale music pls hit shatta Wale like.” Shatta Wale followed with his Shatta Movement Empire release African King, placing songs like “God of the Universe” on the Apple Music Ghana Top 200, before releasing the single “One More Year” and teaming with Nigerian artists Tekno and Bankuli on his Afrobeats album Konekt.
Stonebwoy (Livingstone Etse Satekla) commands an equally dedicated base from Ashaiman, in Greater Accra. Rising through rap showcases on Adom FM’s Kasahare Level and early hits like 2012’s “Climax” and “Ghetto Love,” he launched Burniton Music Group and built a catalog running through Grade 1, Necessary Evil, and 2017’s Epistles of Mama. That era produced staples like “One Thing” featuring Damaris and the hit “Bawasaaba.” Under the “Bawasaaba” video, one listener wrote: “Who else is in support that Stonebwoy is just talented? #EOM #Bawasaaba #BHIM🔥🔥.” Stonebwoy’s 2023 album 5th Dimension pushed his sound into Afropop and amapiano, setting up his single “Jejerje,” which hit the top of both YouTube and Apple Music charts in Ghana. His 2024 album UP & RUNNIN6, issued with Warner Music Group’s ADA Worldwide, brought in features from ODUMODUBLVCK, Duncan Mighty, and Spice, while his single “Many Times” continues to hold down local Audiomack rotation.
The scene’s club rotation also regularly pulls in diaspora and regional voices. British-Ghanaian artist Eugy Official, born in Ghana before moving to London, became a club fixture with 2016’s “Dance for Me” alongside Mr Eazi, 2017’s Team Salut-produced “Tick Tock,” and “Captain” featuring South African vocalist Siza from the Flavourz EP. Under the “Tick Tock” video, one viewer wrote, “I feel Eugy is underrated like highly underrated.” Siza followed “Captain” with her debut video for “Say What You Want” featuring Eugy, and later her 2019 Pull Up EP. Eugy tapped directly back into Accra’s local sound on his five-track Home Run EP, pairing with Kumasi’s Jhay Bhad for the drill track “Show Me The Light” and DanceGod Lloyd on “BumBumBum,” before dropping recent singles like 2024’s “He Called Me” and 2025’s “God Is Good.”
Nigerian artists Falz and D’Banj also remain woven into Ghana’s performance circuit. Falz, who won Best African Rapper at AFRIMA in Accra in 2018 after shifting from law to music, linked with Medikal and Maleek Berry for 2018’s “Next” and appeared on “Ghana Jollof” alongside Kwabena Kwabena. He has since released the 2025 album The Feast and his 2026 EP Break Time. D’Banj, whose early foundation traces back to recording with Don Jazzy in Kas’ studio in 2004, dropped the video for “Action” in 2018 and has kept up club appearances with his 2024 album The Entertainer: D’Sequel and 2025’s “Tobari” featuring DJ Maphorisa and DJ OBI.
This rotation is backed by deep history. Highlife originated in the late 19th and early 20th century Gold Coast as an expression of modernity and resistance, and the 1990s introduced hiplife when Reggie Rockstone blended rap, local dialect, and street speech with Highlife and Dancehall. On today’s MUSIGA track counts, Sarkodie, KiDi, and Kuami Eugene sit above the pack, framed by events like the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards. Foreign crossover moments happen—Black Sherif’s “Kwaku the Traveller” made history as the first Ghanaian record to top Apple Music Nigeria, and Shatta Wale reached international listeners through a collaboration with Beyoncé. Yet the current pulse of the local scene belongs to the tracks dominating home rotation, led by Black Sherif’s 2025 release “Sacrifice” and D Global and Lasmid’s “Darkest Style.”

I am African American. I hope that African Americans do not become upset when I say this:
♥ 292Outside of the United States, African musicians have made an amazing concerted effort to re-Africanize music that has been mislabeled as "Salsa", "Merengue" and other names that give credit to those who "appropriated" the musical genres associated with African music and made it appear as though non-Africans are the original inventors.

The Caribbean is now another happy recipient of the progeny of Africans whose musical talents were plundered without ever receiving payment, let alone recognition. This reinvigoration of Africentric music by real Africans is now what African Americans need to pull ourselves out of the entertainment trap set by the sex-starved, Molech-worshipping, Ashkenazi leaders, who have a disgusting knack of capturing our talent when we are at our best and brightest, sexualizing not just what we sing, but sexualizing us too.
The ancestors have now sent some of her children to wake us up. Those of us who are intelligent enough to listen will heed the words of these musical griots and adjust our music to fit the spiritual needs of continental Africans and Africans in the Diaspora by relearning the languages, words, stories -- and above all, the music that has kept us alive, even when we did not know it.
Please . . . let us open our hearts and arms to African performers so that our talents are no longer sexualized by Hollywood. We owe that to ourselves and our children.
Well explained brother respect for your knowledge
