If you drop into a nightlife spot or tuk-tuk bar in Phnom Penh right now, hip-hop is what is coming through the speakers. That sound has dominated Cambodian nightlife since around 2019, built on Khmer-language rhyming that moves between street punchlines, Afrobeats rhythms, and traditional arrangements. At the center of that ecosystem is VannDa.

Born in Sihanoukville and now based in Phnom Penh, VannDa operated as an independent singer between 2016 and 2018 before joining Baramey Production. He broke out into massive local dominance by trading lines in Khmer and English, dropping Skull the Album in 2020 and Skull 2 (Season 1) in 2022. By 2025, his output centered on The Treyvisai Trilogy, supported by major staging like the Battambang and Phnom Penh concerts that May and a Super Concert run organized with Baramey and Tiger. His catalog moves the numbers: “សុវណ្ណភូមិ (GOLDEN LAND)” landed in May 2025, followed by the April 2026 drop “ជួបជុំ (BACK HOME).” As one listener put it plainly under “Golden Land”: “At this point, you can’t mention Cambodia without mentioning VannDa.”

Baramey, founded in 2016 by Laura Mam and Thida Buth Mam, became the first Cambodian label to partner with an international major when it struck an agreement with ADA Asia in 2021. Its roster also drove the pivot of SUZANA (Suzana Reth). After reaching the semifinals of The Voice Cambodia and recording for Rasmey Hang Meas, she joined Baramey in 2024. Following collaborations like “Unbroken” with Laura Mam, “LOST,” and singles like “2AM” and “Come Back Home” with YuuHai, she hit number 10 on the Cambodia Apple Music chart with the August 2026 duet “TIKI TIKI feat. VANNDA.”

Across the capital’s streaming charts, GMENGZ and jady supply the melodic, high-rotation anthems. GMENGZ, who blends modern beats with traditional Cambodian music and focuses on relationship songwriting, racked up over 44 million views on “កុំច្រឡំ (បងទេីបតែពេញកំលោះ)” and 43 million on “STEAV JOR ស្ទាវជ័រ ft YUUHAI.” His September 2026 track “ANGEL.mp4” went to number 13 on YouTube Trending Music in Cambodia, sitting alongside catalog staples like “ប៉ាបងមានប្រាក់,” “កំលោះកំសត់,” and “PEM PEM” featuring Norith.

Jady operates under the banner AMATAK on the move, logging more than 130,000 monthly Spotify listeners and over 134 million views on YouTube with an Afro-Beat classification on Apple Music. Operating out of Phnom Penh, he works closely with Yuuhai, Meezy24k, and YCN Tomie on tracks like “CHKOUT NG SREY,” “OUN V2,” and “Lost,” keeping the club cycle turning through 2026 with solo singles “MA LYFE” and “Vetenea.”

The sound outside the capital is just as active. Siem Reap rapper Tep Piseth, who commands over 104,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and 177 million top video views, delivered the seven-track project Thief of the Moon in 2024 before releasing “HOW U FEEL” and “មេតំបន់/MAY DOMBON” in 2026. Piseth frequently links with contemporary hip-hop and traditional artist NPN, notably on the 2025 release “កម្លាំងខ្មែរ.” NPN, holding roughly 53,000 monthly listeners, consistently places singles like “នាងធ្លាប់ប្រាប់,” “Channavinlyna,” and the May 2026 cut “PHNOM PENH NIGHT ft. HENA” directly onto domestic playlists.

Crews remain essential to how records break on the ground. The B-Side collective—featuring 2MDIE, S.A.N.E, Really Jing, and OG Golden—has staged 20 events over two years while handling its own audio and visual production. 2MDIE, who counts 98,000 monthly listeners and over 72 million views across his video catalog, jumped onto the Cambodian Afrobeats track “Cha Cha Cha” with MC Sey in April 2025 after linking with American producers Preston Robinson and Seann Patrick for 2024’s “Don’t Play With Us.” By mid-2026, 2MDIE was pushing solo joints like “ប្តូរ | Change” alongside the Toymin Noy collaboration “Huh!,” running parallel to DIA’s street drops “I LUV U” (featuring Vanno, Robert Cuhh, and Chelt Nudt) and “I NAM TAI.”

None of this emerged in a vacuum. DJ Sope is credited with initiating Cambodia’s hip-hop scene in the late 1990s, followed by DJ Illest working as the country’s first hip-hop DJ and turntablist. In 2005, Sok Visal established KlapYaHandz, operating as a collective between 2006 and 2009 that fostered talent including Vuthea, Vi70, Vin Vitou, Reezy, Sochhata, Siva, and Ruthko. Early localization efforts by Khmer1Jivit and Kmeng Khmer proved that Khmer-language bars could work on commercial beats.

While domestic stages remain the focus, VannDa took the sound abroad to showcases like Rolling Loud and Big Mountain in Thailand, Takao Rock in Taiwan, and the ASEAN Music Showcase in Singapore, driven by “Time to Rise” featuring Master Kong Nay, which surpassed 100 million views. At home, the music stays anchored in sweaty rooms like B-Box Club at Factory Phnom Penh, where 2MDIE and the Border Samaki concert lineup performed.
