In July 2026, HYOI released “MS. BALLER,” trading verses with Luci Gang under Outlet & Friends and Candid Music Ent. A month later, the pairing flipped on Luci Gang’s “TYPE SHI.” Neither video leaned on the polished styling common in mainstream releases. Both arrived plain, unvarnished, and focused entirely on the delivery. As one listener wrote under the clip for “MS. BALLER”: “효이는 얼굴에 랩이 없는데 걍 허슬러에 랩도 ㅈㄴ 잘함” (“HYOI doesn’t look like a rapper, but she’s just a hustler and raps damn well”). Under “TYPE SHI,” another viewer focused on the visuals: “뮤비 기획 누가 하는 거냐 다 좋네” (“who is planning the music videos, they’re all so good”).

HYOI, born Kim Hee-hyun and based in Seoul, has shaped a direct, aggressive rapping style since her October 2021 debut EP, Dame girl-the ILLUSION. Working independently and affiliated with 까마귀공방, she spent 2024 issuing projects like Chuljeong Vol.2 and PANDORA, alongside the single “GNARLY,” credited with Antisocial Ben and Ten Off. That same year, she reached the final four of the competition series Rap Cup, performing “Lonely Money” with beatboxer Bigman and “BAD B*ITCH” alongside MASKon. By August 2026, she followed up her joint singles with the solo cut “U CAN.”

Luci Gang (Lee Eun-seon, born in 1996) has operated along a parallel independent track. A member of the crew NEWTOWN BANGERS, she debuted in 2020 with the EP Luci vs Gang and spent six years building out her catalog outside the traditional label system. Her March 2025 release, Home Sweet Home, was a 13-track solo effort, setting up her 2026 album Rolling Stone. On Rolling Stone, Luci Gang is credited as primary artist, producer, lyricist, and composer. She described the record’s sonic balance as comparable to tom yum goong—sour and spicy—citing Joey Valence & Brae and Tyler, the Creator as recent listening.

The standout track from Rolling Stone, “HEADLOCK,” dropped in July 2026, also appearing under the project title 무한궤도. Her output as a self-contained one-person act has extended steadily into live spaces. After appearing on the bill for the 2025 Seoul Forest Hip Hop Festival, she booked her first solo headline show at Rolling Hall in Sangsu on August 21, 2026, selling out the venue ahead of the 7:30 p.m. start time.

Both artists have woven their output into a network of frequent collaborators across the scene. In April 2026, Luci Gang paired with Rohann (이로한, formerly known as WEBSTER B) on the collaborative single “장지기장 (GET JIGGY!).” Rohann, who finished as runner-up on High School Rapper 2 and debuted via VMC in 2018, brought his own extensive run of releases, including TAKE FIVE and BE RIGHT BACK.

That same month, HYOI linked with solo artist Ai BANCO on “FAV,” which featured Shane and credited Ai BANCO with the arrangement. Ai BANCO, who dropped his own single “Cardigan” with Shane and homezone in late April 2026 following tracks like 2025’s “Ring R!ng,” offered a melodic frame that contrasted HYOI’s harsher edge. By September 29, 2026, veteran artist Verbal Jint brought Luci Gang in as the featured guest on his single “SUPERDRY.”

On Show Me The Money 12

When Luci Gang stepped onto Mnet’s Show Me The Money 12 on January 22, 2026, she opened episode two’s second-preliminary 60-second “fire pit” mission and cleared it with three passes. The clip of her 60-second round quickly built traction online, logging 272,999 views by October 5. Under the video, viewers tuned straight into the format and the delivery. “걍 랩퍼블릭같이 랩이나 계속 뽑아내는 프로그램하자 계속듣게” (“Let’s just make a show like Rap:Public that keeps pumping out raps so I can keep listening”), one listener commented. Another noted, “루시갱 손심바 만나고 좀 귀여워짐” (“Luci Gang got a bit cuter after meeting Son Simba”).

Luci Gang carried that momentum all the way to the broadcast’s final special stage, linking up with Untell, KAMBO, and YLN Foreign on “GR8EST (Prod. by APRO).” The run also widened the audience for her catalog. By October 5, her video for “HEADLOCK”—the standout cut from her third album Rolling Stone, tracked across two days with producer Bando—had climbed past 1.6 million views. Her collaborative tracks saw steady heat as well, with “TYPE SHI (feat. HYOI)” crossing 831,000 views and HYOI’s “MS. BALLER” passing 185,000.

Offline, her first solo headline show sold out on August 21 before the 7:30 p.m. doors at Rolling Hall in Sangsu.

Meanwhile in Stockholm: Jalda

Jalda, Swedish hyperpop artist, in headphones

More than 7,000 kilometres from Seoul, Swedish artist Jalda (Jalda Badouran) is making the same refusal in a different genre. Her hyperpop single “ANIME MIG”, out September 4, 2026 on Island Records Sweden, sits in WorldWidePop’s Top 100 hero rotation. Like HYOI, she does not dress the part: she co-directed the video herself with Jonathan Perlmann, wore styling pulled partly from second-hand shops, and smiles through 15 to 20 tooth gems. Like HYOI, she came up outside the system – 26, from Täby north of Stockholm, no formal music training, a job she quit to make music. “Taking the easy path isn’t for me,” she told Elle Sweden in August.

The two are not doing the same thing. HYOI raps hard and lets the plainness carry the joke; Jalda sings over WILJAM’s bright, crushed production, and her title “ANIME MIG” is itself a pun – “anime me”, but also, as one listener explained under the video, close to the Swedish for “are you with me”. What they share is the stance: the image is theirs, unpolished on purpose, and the music does the selling. There is even a line back to Seoul. Jalda names Yaeji, the Korean-American producer and singer, among her influences, alongside Rosalía.

Listeners are finding her the way they find HYOI: sideways, through the algorithm. “ANIME MIG” passed 90,000 views within a month, and the comments arrive in Swedish (“Jalda släpper bara bangers” – “Jalda only puts out bangers”), English, Spanish and Japanese – one fan from Japan spotted a Totoro homage in the video. Swedish singer Victor Leksell has already called her earlier single “Blond” the song of the year.

The anime in the title isn’t decoration: the video’s Totoro nod drew fans from Japan within weeks, and her line back to Yaeji gives her a natural way into Asian listeners that most Swedish pop never has. And we’ll say it with pride: Jalda has the Eurasian look – a face that belongs as much in Tokyo or Seoul as in Stockholm. That’s cross-appeal you can’t manufacture. – the editor

Editor's note

“MS. BALLER” is HYOI’s earworm. “TYPE SHI” is another banger – shot in a supermarket, two “ordinary” nerd girls who turn out to be hustlers, and nothing about them says K-pop idol. And watch HYOI: she never looks straight at the camera. Always just off it.

What the Swedish says, line by line.

Ah ah, a demure young lady when I’m not rapping

Blah blah, try your best—I’m the hottest topic

RIP, boys—I blocked you; your calls can’t get through

A brazen woman, type shit

Ah, type shit

Ah ah, a demure young lady when I’m not rapping

Blah blah, try your best—I’m the hottest topic

RIP, boys—I blocked you; your calls can’t get through

A brazen woman, type shit

Ah, type shit

Riding in a smooth-riding car with my HYOI

We don’t fast; we bake a big, thick dough like Seongsimdang

Son, don’t add any toppings

Yeah, lil mama in the serve

Watch me go straight, no U-turns

Every day is a Wednesday with no leftovers

Pay me and keep my toss

Eat this and get lost, asshole—I’m tired of talking

Yeah, I’m not in a Girl Scout; I don’t do volunteer work, Mr. Fraud

Mr. Mosquito, trying to suck my blood? This isn’t paradise for bloodsuckers

Even Korean hip-hop got pushed back—pay me back what you owe, with interest

Hmm, I got a feeling

I’m gonna hit the top on my own; I don’t care about the bullshit

Leave me on this road covered in speed bumps—let me crash

Yeah, a mindset that wins out

Rather than quit, leave your coffin

Been a baller, been a shot-caller

Playing like Beth Harmon

Palms stretching up in the cut like I’m doing Pilates

Stop calling, boy

Hang up like a customer service center

Life’s too short

I have no time except to make money

Ah ah, a demure young lady when I’m not rapping

Blah blah, try your best—I’m the hottest topic

RIP, boys—I blocked you; your calls can’t get through

A brazen woman, type shit

Blah blah, try your best—I’m the hottest topic

RIP, boys—I blocked you; your calls can’t get through

A brazen woman, type shit

Ah, type shit

How many, how many broke bois out there?

I can’t count ’em

You stupid bastard, I can’t see ya

Try reaching my toes

The more I say what needs saying, the more the “washed-up idiots” get riled up

I can’t catch your feelings, uh

All I can give you is humiliation

I block ’em

Don’t be dumb, you ain’t Flacko

Picking a fight with me is an accident

Like it’s a habit, I make it 5–0

Yeah, I just… touched down in Mangwon

I sleep in the morning without even drinking

I just leave your messages on read

You’re disappointed? Yeah, take care—yeh yeh

No class at all; I’m a little sensitive to fake-ass bastards

This pretty boy wants to know if I’m for real—bitch, go Gemini it

You say I’m different from those other guys

I don’t fall for it without a stamp of approval

Even if you take it off, you ain’t Balming

I’m not giving off a sexy vibe—what am I supposed to do, damn

He wants me to get messy in the backseat, god damn

They say success is a drug, uh—I’m an aspiring junkie
