The Afro-Andean sound is getting louder in Peru. Yanaruna Festival, a three-day gathering in El Carmen held on a January schedule, drew more than 1,500 people to its first edition, and its organisers frame it as a deliberate join between Andean and Afro-Peruvian music rather than two separate worlds. Milena Warthon's "ARARIWA," from the album LATINCHOLA, is tagged Latin and was produced with Kayfex, a DJ who has worked alongside Isabela Merced and played that first festival. The production sits in club territory with a DJ at the desk, which is where this crossover is heading.
This month the WorldWidePop playlist added nothing new, so the 163 videos on it are the whole October story. The top of the list shows where the energy sits: Milena Warthon's "VICTORIA" next to Makani Yame's "Eyes Take Over," SEMKHA by Dedrik & Leczin, a Lil B clip shot in Bangkok, and a NOMAD video featuring a performer from Kyrgyzstan. The Halluci Nation's 10th anniversary reissue of *We Are the Halluci Nation*, with Yasiin Bey on "R.E.D.", is another one to track.
