October 2026 in the New Zealand scene

The New Zealand scene is loud about its roots and happy to mix them. DeHusslar comes out of the country's outdoor sound system culture and moves between dubstep, drum and bass, Afro-rhythms and trap. Their 'Feel the Weight of the World' runs on a 150 BPM hip-hop and melodic trap production, with four anonymous global vocalists. Flamingo Pier's *Woven Together* brings disco, house, jazz and soul onto the same floor. The trio started in London and came back to Tāmaki Makaurau to make it. Where's Jai's 'Light Left Dim' is a dark, addictive summer anthem from a band with a cult following outside Aotearoa, and Awning, the Tāmaki Makaurau alt-rock band, is known for live shows that hit hard.

This month the WorldWidePop playlist added nothing new. Its only video is Born From Culture's, and it stands alone on the page. Our research found nothing about that artist for October 2026, so there is no sound to describe here. What the page does show is who is watching. Commenters say they are listening from South Africa, Poland and the Philippines, so the New Zealand page already has an audience well beyond the country it is named after.

Keep an eye on the Aotearoa Alternative Awards, hosted by 95bFM, which will be held at the Hollywood Avondale on 14 November. DeHusslar's *Watermelon and Dick* festival album is also due in November, and its third release is already out.

    • Fasure, But It Would've Went Even Deeper If Dey Used Deir Own Cultures Music. I Don't See Dis As A Tribute. Dis Was For Dey Culture, Not A Way To Use Black Music For Attention And Popularity.

  2. I actually love the choice in music. It’s creative, reaches out to expose these amazing dancers to a wider audience, and showcases (as many ppl commented on the Georgia video) the SHEER AURA

    • @RuachHakodesh777 That's a pretty big assumption to make from a soundtrack choice 😂 not every use of Black American music is an attempt to erase or "smudge" another culture maybe it was just a ✨creative decision✨💀

    • Its kinda bad, it just does not match the video or the feel at all.. same as on the previous ones. I dont get it. It also does not match the tempo at all. All it does is turns these into the most generic music videos ever.

  3. This series is already genuinely so incredible – from the cultures it depicts, to the way it’s edited, to the choices of music – sends chills up my spine.

  5. I think I understand the music choices in these videos, but it would be so awesome to discover artists outside of American rap. These videos are visually so stunning and so deeply rooted in culture, it would feel so much immersive with music from local artists. Some Maori or Georgian rap perhaps 👀

    • yeah could be cool to use local stuff, but that aside the choices have been pretty fantastic. i love the contrast of the old with the new.
