Rotterdam sets the pace for this scene. Rotterdam Airlines started in 2009 as a crew, and their hip-hop and R&B clips have several hundred million views between them. Their 2016 album Gate 16 was the turning point. Its track "Gass" became the most-viewed Dutch-language music video on YouTube, and the record won an Edison. HUNNA, a party platform started in 2018, carries the underground side with trap and hip-hop nights that now run their own soundsystem and edits. It is pushing a trap and electronic crossover that stays easy to dance to, and ahead of Amsterdam Dance Event it is linking up with LA's Trap Rave.
Nothing new came into the WorldWidePop playlist in October, so this month is about the 86 videos already here. The core still holds. TopNotch carries ADF Samski's "Gouden Ticket" from the Mascotte Masters session and Lijpe's "Was Er Nooit", both among the most recent additions. A few coding tutorials and a WordPress how-to also sit in the mix, a reminder that not everything on the page is a club record.
Listeners are writing in from Suriname, Ghana and Curaçao, so the Dutch sound is reaching well beyond the Netherlands. Watch the calendar. On Saturday 10 October, Dutch pop artist Nobu plays Rotown, with R&B and soul singer Amina in support, on the same night as Rotown's BANGERS. Later in the month, the Melodic Room, Vvissionn and Perspectives showcase takes over Onderhans in Amsterdam on 23 October during ADE.
