Malaysia's scene right now won't pick one lane. ALYPH has been part of the country's hip-hop scene since a 2019 collaborative album with SonaOne, and their later work has gone darker and more reflective, with melancholic tracks like "Ingat." Alpha, the boyband that sold out Zepp Kuala Lumpur on its debut solo concert, sits on the other side of the room with bright, glossy pop like "Gelato" and "Mona Lisa." Fans call themselves Alphanites, and press has already compared the group to KRU and Ruffedge. Editors are now putting Malaysian pop and hip-hop in the same feature, and the crowds are following.
Nothing new was added to the WorldWidePop playlist in October, so the story is in what's already here. The twelve videos include the most recent entries: ALYPH's "Ingat," Nigel Sparks' "Doa" with a featured guest, IZAMA's "Bersua Nanti" with Suraya Yusoff and MK K-Clique, and MC Syze's "Tak Nak" with a featured rapper. Read together, they show the scene's range: a melancholy ballad, a feature-heavy rap cut, and a sung-and-rapped groove, all sitting in one list without anyone needing to explain the jump.
The listeners are close by. Commenters say they're tuning in from Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore, which fits a Malay-language sound that travels easily across the region. Watch 17 October at Odeon KL, where Rockstation has booked a double bill, part of a run of nights pairing acts across generations. The organiser says younger listeners' tastes are changing, and this month's crowds suggest they're right.
