Denmark Playlist

Copenhagen's scene leans dreamy and fuzzy, with a lot of DIY electronic production and a mostly female-led cast. Escho has released many of its leftfield artists, and the Rhythmic Music Conservatory has fed alt-pop through Smerz, ML Buch, Astrid Sonne and Erika de Casier. Helena Gao is the one pushing that sound toward the dancefloor. Her *gao dan dan* EP runs hyperpop-tinged dance music through Y2K diva energy, and she describes it as feeling like "a speed racer and a bubblegum-pop princess." She argues that dance music is pop's most tangible asset, and that a song played once in a club "totally lived up to its function." Her Shanghai nightlife years shaped that instinct, and her viral "Lao Shi" has been a dance-pop hit on Douyin across Asia.

On the WorldWidePop playlist for Denmark, October brought no new additions. The page holds one video, Helena Gao's "nan peng you," so the month's story is as much about what didn't arrive as what did. One artist is carrying the Danish list for now, and her work is pulling in two directions at once: a flirtatious Danish frankness and a Chinese pop sweetness that set off real cultural arguments when her bops reached China.

Listeners who want the next step should look at Copenhagen's club calendar. Klub Geyser has lined up Emma Danielsen and Aviaya, bringing Danish-language jazzy pop and dreamy soundscapes to the same room where the city's fuzzier electronic acts tend to land.
