Beyond Afrobeats: Nigeria’s Pop Lane

On local streaming charts and across city airwaves, current Nigerian pop is anchored by artists who balance heavy local rotation with distinct songwriting. Omah Lay opened 2026 with his sophomore studio album, Clarity of Mind, which debuted at number one on Apple Music Nigeria following his 2022 LP Boy Alone. Balancing percussion-heavy highlife roots with modern pop cadences, Omah Lay has remained a fixture through emotionally focused releases like the September 2026 single “Company” and the October visual for “CANADA BREEZE.” His arc began locally in Port Harcourt, where early tracks “Do Not Disturb” and “Hello Brother” picked up heavy commercial airplay before his 2020 debut EP, Get Layd, placed five songs simultaneously in the Nigerian top 10. As one listener posted under the “CANADA BREEZE” visualizer: “IF you are here in 2090, i was here in October 2026. OmahLay was the greatest artist of his generation.”

Running parallel to Omah Lay’s introspective chart dominance is Falz, the Lagos rapper, songwriter, actor, and lawyer whose catalog continually engages current political realities. Falz released his EP Break Time in June 2026, driven by the single “Ole”—the Yoruba word for thief. Featuring Oiza x Meyi and Firstklaz, the track directly references the abduction of teachers and the killing of a brigadier general. At the same time, Falz continues to register heavily in clubs and on mobile video feeds; his 2026 track “Omoge,” produced by Aykbeats and built on a sample of Sir Shina Peters’ 1989 cut “Shinamania,” spread widely on TikTok and Instagram. His core listenership remains deeply rooted across domestic metropolitan centers including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Benin City, and Enugu. Falz’s catalog has balanced social observation with dance rhythms for years, evident in older mainstays like the 2018 video for “Boogie” alongside Sir Dauda and the storytelling track “Child Of The World,” where a viewer noted the track delivered a “story that would have taken 1hr in a noolywood movie, done in less than 5mins.”

The domestic pop landscape is also seeing movement from new group formats. The trio MYST—formed by members MIRA, SUCRÈ, and TRELLA—debuted via LOOM with the godOmarr-produced single “Dynamite.” By September 2026, the group followed up with “REAL SHII,” an uptempo track recorded with producers Jaytron and Dan Akins that integrates UK garage and dance percussion. “A Nigerian girl group?? I’m rooting for y’all REAL BAD,” wrote one listener under the track’s visualizer. Meanwhile, international rotation feeds back into the scene through artists like Zemi, who issued the 2026 album PALOMA alongside tracks like “mira,” “baba,” and the September 2026 release “Luna.”

Songwriting architecture in this market often traces back to performers who came up through major frontline hubs. Peruzzi, known for his association with Davido’s DMW imprint after launching with Golden Boy Records in 2016, built an extensive track record writing major domestic releases such as Davido’s “FIA” and 2Baba’s “Amaka.” In addition to solo club records like “Majesty” and albums like Rum & Boogie, Peruzzi issued his fourth studio album, Sabali, featuring guest verses from Fireboy DML, Don Jazzy, Bella Shmurda, and Zlatan, before following up with Hold Me Down.

That conversational, laid-back vocal style is also central to Surulere rapper Ajebutter22. After emerging alongside his sister Taymi in the Manchester-based duo Soyinka’s Afro in 2009, he established his solo signature with “Omo Pastor” in 2012 and the Studio Magic-helmed LP Anytime Soon. Known for his laconic flow on mid-tempo staples like “Bad Gang” featuring Falz and “Ghana Bounce,” Ajebutter22 followed his 15-track 2023 album Soundtrack To The Good Life with the June 2026 EP Big Bad World.

Across the wider landscape, street-pop maintains a grip on local rotation, heavily propelled by discovery on TikTok. Asake’s M$NEY era drove substantial commercial traction, continuing an evolution of street-level rap that traces back to 2015, when Olamide, Phyno, and Reminisce established a movement around their collaboration “Local rapper.” That shift established a lineage that paved the way for acts such as Lil Kesh, Zlatan, Naira Marley, Chinko Ekun, and Zoro.

Behind the boards, producers like P.Priime fuse traditional rhythms with current drum programming, while Tempoe’s production history remains tied to radio-first street hits. On the live and club circuit, figures like DJ Spinall have served as anchors, issuing records like 2023’s “Bunda” featuring Olamide and Kemuel, and 2024’s “One Call” alongside Omah Lay and Tyla. Spinall previously made history as the first Nigerian DJ to headline Glastonbury, SXSW, and Coachella. While international concert circuits have seen Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido sell out major venues overseas, the heartbeat of the scene remains fixed to what commands the speakers at home, straight out of the studios of Lagos and Port Harcourt.
