Turn on a speaker in Ethiopia right now, and the soundscape quickly departs from older regional templates. In the Amharic pop lane and across domestic digital channels, high-velocity rap, drill, and dancehall cuts dominate the rotation of younger listeners. Leading that energy is the collaborative output of SAINT MOSSES and Young CJ, who have turned joint releases into major events.

Their anthem “ICON,” which brought in Lil PPCS and Young Sura, pulled in more than 2.9 million views on weekly charts, fueled by rapid delivery and heavy percussion. Online, the reaction is immediate; under the video for “ICON,” one viewer posted, “Who is before 1million view 🔥🔥🔥🔥,” tracking the metrics in real time. SAINT MOSSES and Young CJ have followed that up with a steady release schedule, dropping tracks like the 2026 drill joint “HELM AYCHE MATA,” the 2025 single “GUNSHOT,” and “BAD,” which surpassed one million views. Collaborating with Lil PPCS and Botla DP on “SPARTAN,” the crew has carved out a direct sound labeled as new Ethiopian dancehall, sitting right beside releases like their “4 & 9 DISS Track.”

Young CJ’s individual catalog mirrors that momentum. Active across digital streaming platforms since 2020, he has built a catalog stretching from videos like “Chemikal,” “Band Storm,” and “Duffle Bag” to his 2025 drop “How You Do That – Single.” That same year saw a burst of singles including “No Hook,” “Call Back,” “Stewie Griffin,” “Def Jam: Fight for FL,” and features alongside artists like Tenkay on “LEGOZ,” Boobie Lootaveli on “Disco Ball,” and Project Pat on “No Stress.”

Holding down the hip-hop space with a different cadence is Negestat, the two-man rap outfit formed by Emperor and Qädamawi. Launched in February 2007 in the Ethiopian calendar, the duo has anchored their music in domestic themes that have built widespread listener discussion. Their catalog shows steady activity: following the 2023 release of the project Bayalew, Negestat released a sequence of singles including “Addis Amet Be Addis Kelem,” “Keziyas,” and “Ere.”

Their collaborative reach extends across the scene. On the 2021 cut “Abay Mado,” Emperor and Qädamawi brought in Veronica Adane, Amanuel Yeshiweded, and Kassahun Bogale, while their 2022 single “Abunu” featured Wendi Maru and Samuel Fikadu. When they dropped “Tsenate” featuring Efi—produced by Shemane and Endrias Belete alongside executive producers Tigist Ayele and Maranata Tegegne—listeners responded immediately. Under the video, one fan wrote, “Hiphop ጨርቁን ጥሎ አበደ ማርያምን 🔥 🔥 🔥” (“Hip-hop has gone stark raving mad, I swear”).

The Ethiopian landscape equally makes space for regional pop centered on local languages and visual scope. Performer Fortuna Gebresellassie entered the conversation with “TEMBIENAY,” a single sung in Tigrinya that centers Tigrayan identity. Designed as part of an intended visual trilogy, the video was framed around historical inspiration, with Gebresellassie drawing on Queen Makeda and King Solomon. Gebresellassie, who also works in film production with credits across screen projects including Manifest, Fear the Candyman, and Blue Bloods, brings an explicit visual scale to the track.

Connecting current club playlists to the foundation of modern domestic pop is Asgegnew Ashko, known widely as Asge. Born in Gamo Gofa in southern Ethiopia, Ashko first stepped into performance after presenting a poem at an event in Wolaita, eventually establishing himself as an Addis Ababa-based solo act with eight singles to his name. His breakthrough track “Dendasho” circulated heavily on YouTube in 2014, followed by 2016’s “Bale Robe Hundefa” and “Yadisse,” the latter passing four million views to become one of the country’s most watched releases.

Ashko’s domestic visibility led to the fifth season of Coke Studio Africa in 2017, where he performed alongside Ugandan singer Sheebah Karungi. That crossover run was matched by core staples at home, including his September 2017 collaboration with Betty G, “Zono Zoka,” and his August 2018 solo single “Lade.”

While home-grown artists drive local rotation, dancefloors and mobile playlists also fold in broader continental hits. Nigerian Afrobeats singer and producer Tekno, born Augustine Miles Kelechi Okechukwu, appears in the mix with tracks like “Adaeze,” “Alhaji,” and “Wayo.” Alongside older continental numbers like “Pana” and “Buga (Lo Lo Lo),” those cuts circulate through Addis Ababa sound systems right next to Asgegnew Ashko’s “Lade.”
