October 2026 in the WO! Dance scene

The WO! scene runs on Olamide's "Wo!!", and its dance side has grown out of Afro House. Meka Oku describes the style as rooted in Angola, built on footwork, grooves and musicality, and taught at every level. His classes run in New York City, and his tags point to a local class community around the style. A 2021 class to Olamide's "Tesina Pot" was filed under Afro House, AfroBeats and Dancehall, so the Nigerian pop and the dance floor are already the same room. Meka Oku's music is tagged with kuduro and electro too. Patience J's "Colours" for Breakin' Convention takes the same idea onstage, with a cast of 20 dancing modern Afro forms, including n'dombolo and azonto, to Afro-beat tracks.

Nothing new came into the WorldWidePop playlist this month. The six videos on it are the ones already standing, and the recent end of the list is mostly Olamide. Two of the newest entries are Olamide's "Science Student", danced by Sherrie Silver and by Patience J, and two are "Wo!!", danced by Reis Fernando and Phil Wright. Meka Oku's "GWARA GWARA" by L.A.X sits at the top. Phil Wright's wider archive is mostly US hip-hop and trap, so his "Wo!!" sits a little apart from the rest of his catalogue.

Commenters are writing in from Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana, with Nigeria clearly leading. Watch the New York class circuit and the Afro House crossover next. Those are the parts of this scene the notes can actually back up.
