Andean Playlist

Andean pop is loud right now, and Peru is leading it. Milena Warthon's Latinchola tour drew about 4,000 people to the Anfiteatro del Parque de la Exposición in Lima, a show that ran from 7:40 to 10:40 pm. The sound joins Andean roots to pop production and cumbia, and the tour has already played Cusco, Huaraz and cities in Spain, Belgium, Britain and Italy. Kichwa lyrics are moving too. Ñusta Picuasi and Warthon's Florecer, released in August, is pitched as a bridge between Ecuador and Peru.

Nothing was added to the WorldWidePop playlist this month, so its 84 videos stand as they are. The most recent are Warthon's FAN with Los Mirlos, one of the best-known groups in Peruvian Amazonian cumbia, Ñusta Picuasi's Tu piel and a second version of Vuela, and VYCKOW's Tushuy (Fandango). Read together, they say the scene is not a museum piece. Pop singers are pulling cumbia and fandango into the mix, and the mix is working.

Listeners are mostly in Peru, with Ecuador and Bolivia close behind. Chila Jatun's feature on Warthon's Volvió a Latir gave her a major Bolivian audience, and Renata Flores appears on Hijas del Sol. Watch Arequipa, where the tour lands at Teatro Fénix on 24 October, and the free Suena Perú II at the same Lima park on 10 October, which puts rock, cumbia and Andean acts on one bill across generations.
